When travelers evaluate the ethics of an animal sanctuary, they naturally focus on the direct care of the residents—the food, the space, and the medical attention provided. However, true conservation requires a much broader view that encompasses environmental sustainability and responsible waste management. At the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary’s Pattaya branch, this commitment to holistic ecology manifested in an innovative, hands-on circular economy project: the Eco-Friendly Poop Paper Program, which transforms a daily logistical challenge into a valuable educational tool.
The sheer scale of an elephant’s digestive output is a major logistical consideration for any sanctuary. An adult Asian elephant consumes up to 150 kilograms of plant matter—including grass, bamboo, bark, and fruit—every single day. Because their digestive systems are relatively inefficient, breaking down only about 40% of what they eat, the remaining 60% is passed as highly fibrous waste.
With a large herd on site, the sanctuary is faced with tons of manure daily. Rather than allowing this biomass to accumulate and potentially overwhelm the local ecosystem, the sanctuary team devised a brilliant, creative upcycling solution that capitalizes on the high-fiber content of the waste to produce completely odorless, usable paper.
The transformation process is both scientific and meticulously hygienic. First, the manure is collected from the fields and subjected to a rigorous washing process to remove any mud, dirt, and non-fibrous material. The remaining clean fiber is then boiled in large vats at exceptionally high temperatures for several hours, ensuring it is completely sanitized and bacteria-free. Once sterile, the pulp is mixed with water and natural binders, along with organic dyes derived from local plants, flowers, and fruit peels to create a variety of vibrant colors. This mixture is then blended thoroughly until it reaches a smooth consistency.
The next stage brings the project full circle by involving the sanctuary’s visitors. Guests are invited to pull a mesh-lined wooden frame through the water-and-fiber mixture, catching a thin, even layer of pulp on the screen. The frames are then set out under the tropical sun to dry naturally.
Once completely dry, the resulting sheets of paper are peeled away, revealing a durable, uniquely textured, and entirely clean product. This paper is used to create notebooks, postcards, bookmarks, and artisan crafts for the sanctuary shop. Every baht generated from these items goes directly into funding the immense daily food and veterinary bills for the herd.
